That's because you're unlikely to need to book an interview at an enrollment center.

In this article, we'll look at the Global Entry renewal process.

The 24-month grace period

If you plan to renew your Global Entry membership, you can start the process anytime within 1 year of the membership expiring. So, if you are in year 4 of the 5 years of membership then you can start the re-enrollment process.

If you start the re-enrollment process before your membership expires, then you may be eligible for a 24-month grace period where you can continue to enjoy the benefits of your Global Entry membership for an additional 2 years while you are re-enrolling. This can be extremely helpful as the re-enrollment process is not always quick.

If your membership has already expired, you will not be able to take advantage of the grace period and will need to wait until your re-enrollment application is approved to receive the benefits of Global Entry again.

💡

TIP: Start your re-enrollment before your membership expires to taken advantage of the 24 month grace period (2 extra years of membership!).

The steps to renew your Global Entry membership

If you are ready to renew your membership, follow these steps to get the process started.

Go to the official Trusted Traveler Website and log in to access your dashboard

Click Manage membership to get to the Trusted Traveler Program enrollment page

Click the Renew Application button to get to your personal info page

Change any personal information that is no longer up to date

Next you can select the program you would like to renew (Global Entry) and click Next to get to application page

You may be asked to fix any errors about your personal information so just follow the steps to fix those and click Update to move to the application page

On the application page, select Certify at the bottom of the page to get to the certification page

Answer yes or no to whether or not you certify and click Next to get to the final review page

Now you will need to make your payment which is $100 for an additional 5 years. Check out this list of credit cards that include a free Global Entry application fee to see if you may be able to skip the fee

Once you have made your payment, your renewal application will be submitted to a Customs and Border Protection officer to review. If everything checks out, you will be conditionally approved, just like when you applied for the first time.

Will I need to do another interview?

You may not need to do another interview. If all your personal information has remained the same and there have not been any significant changes in your life that may impact your ability to be considered a low-risk traveler then there is a chance you may be approved to renew your application without an interview.

You will receive emails from the Customs and Border Protection agency through your official account about any updates to the status of your renewal. You can also regularly check your dashboard on the official site for any changes. If you need to do another interview, then this will show on the dashboard and you will be able to access the interview scheduling page to schedule your interview.

What about Zoom interviews?

In the case that you have to do another interview, the silver lining is that the Customs and Border Protection agency is piloting a new remote interview process exclusively for renewal candidates.

This means you may not need to schedule an in-person interview (and actually go somewhere to do your interview). You can instead schedule a Zoom interview that you can do from the comfort of your own home.

The bad news is similarly to scheduling an in-person interview, it can be difficult to schedule a Zoom interview because there are often "No appointments available" on the scheduling page or the soonest available time is over a year away.

This is due to the high demand for these appointments and limited supply.

If you're having trouble booking an appointment, check out use an alerting service like AppointmentScanner so you get notified via email or SMS whenever new appointments become available.

What if my membership has already expired?

If your membership has already expired, this unfortunately means that you cannot take advantage of the 24 month grace period. You'll have to return to the Trusted Traveler Program website and follow the steps shown to apply for the Global Entry program. You will also not be able to take advantage of the benefits of the program until you are approved again.

If your membership is close to expiring, we recommend that you begin the renewal process sooner rather.

👋

AppointmentScanner.com is an alerting service which will send you text message, email, and web browser alerts for Global Entry, SENTRI, or NEXUS interview slots at up to three enrollment centers. Although there are more people who have joined the program since it was introduced in 2008, the Global Entry lines in our experience always appear dramatically shorter and are without a doubt faster than the regular line.

How do you get Global Entry?

The process to get Global Entry is straightforward. Follow our tips for applying you'll have your membership in no time.

The process begins by creating an account on the official Trusted Traveler Program (TTP) website from the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency. You'll need to need pay a $100 application fee (at the time of writing this article) to submit your application.

You may be able to avoid this fee if your credit card covers it. Check out this list of credit cards that cover the fee.

Once you have made your payment, you will need to answer a series of personal questions which are used to conduct a background check on you.

Once you receive conditional approval (which can take anywhere from 24 hours to several months – 2 days in our experience), you will be on the final step of the application which is the in-person interview.

Getting the interview is usually a challenge because many Global Entry enrollment centers have limited interview appointments.

For example, the enrollment center in San Francisco is usually booked out a year in advance. To get around this, you can use an alerting service like AppointmentScanner.com to get alerts about cancellations so you can get an interview more quickly.

Check out our full guide on how to get an interview fast.

Once you have scheduled your interview, it’s time to go to the enrollment center and finish the process. Doing an interview with a CBP officer might seem like an intimidating prospect, but don’t worry, it’s not as scary as it seems. Here we will go over what to expect and how you can best prepare yourself.

What do you need to bring to your interview?

You will need to bring a valid passport to your interview. If you have more than one passport, we recommend you bring all of them to your interview so they can be added to your file. For Global Entry, this will enable you to use either passport at the automated Global Entry kiosks once you have been approved for the membership.

If you are not a US citizen, you should also bring your permanent residency card.

You must also provide proof of residency such as a valid driver’s license with your current address, mortgage statement, rental payment statement, utility bill, or any other similar document.

Double check the TTP website that you have everything you need by going to your Dashboard and selecting the Interview Confirmation Link.

What questions do they ask for the Global Entry interview?

If you have made it to this point, the interview is mostly a formality. It means a CBP officer conducted a thorough background check based on your online application and they've already ensured you aren’t on any ‘terror-threat’ list or other watch lists.

Examples of questions you'll be asked at the Global Entry interview are:

Why do you want Global Entry?

Have you traveled internationally in the past five years?

Which countries have you visited during that time?

How frequently do you travel internationally?

Have you ever been arrested, charged, or convicted of any crimes?

Do you have any pending legal issues or outstanding warrants?

What is your current occupation?

Where do you work and what is your job title?

What is the highest level of education you have completed?

Are you currently under investigation for any immigration-related violations?

Have you ever been arrested?

Have you had any issues with customs?

Do you have any medical conditions that may require special attention?

Are you a member of any trusted traveler programs in other countries?

If you have ever traveled to a restricted country (like North Korea) or have been arrested and had the charges dropped, expect more questions about those events and be prepared to have paperwork proving your eligibility and legality (you had a legal reason to be in North Korea).

How long does the Global Entry interview process take?

The interview itself is very short. However, accounting for travel and wait times, the whole process of completing the interview will take at least 1-2 hours. It'll take more time if you don't live near an enrollment center or if your interview time is during business hours.

Most interview enrollment centers are at an airport so the time to travel there and back home already takes some time.

I did my interview at Boston Logan airport which is close to where I live, but if you are headed to LAX or SFO on a busy day, it may take a long time.

Once you arrive for your interview, you'll probably find out you arent' the only one there for an interview. The wait may be up to an hour or more so we recommend taking time off during the week to attend the interview and avoid wait times.

Why do they need my photo?

As part of your interview, the CBP officer will take a photo of you which will be printed on our Global Entry membership card.

In my experience, you won't need this card to use the Global Entry kiosks but I've been asked for it at some customs locations so I carry it with me whenever I travel.

Read this if you have a criminal history

Having a criminal history doesn’t immediately disqualify you from Global Entry. But, the background check in the Global Entry online application may also not alert you about your ineligibility. So you might make it all the way to the interview only to be told you are ineligible at that point. So if you are worried about this, check out the official reasons for ineligibility here before you apply, pay, and schedule your interview.

On the official TTP website, they also state that if you have ever been fingerprinted during an arrest, you will need to bring any court documents you have to your interview.

👋

AppointmentScanner.com is an alerting service which will send you text message, email, and web browser alerts for Global Entry, SENTRI, or NEXUS interview slots at up to three enrollment centers. SENTRI card holders participants may enter the United States by using dedicated primary lanes into the United States at Southern land border ports.

If you've ever waited in line at customs when re-entering the US, you know how long these waits can get. Then Global Entry may be the perfect option for you. Global Entry is a Trusted Traveler Program (TTP) created by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency that allows you to skip the slow customs and immigration lines.

The main Global Entry benefit you’ll enjoy is skipping the long wait to get through customs. Instead, you can use the automated Global Entry kiosks for expedited clearance to re-enter the U.S. after an international trip.

You’d also get access to TSA PreCheck which expedites the airport security screening process.

In my experience, the lines to go through customs and immigration are always shorter for Global Entry than the regular lines.

To join the Global Entry program, all you need to do is apply online, supply all the required information, pay the $100 fee (at the time of writing) for 5 years of membership, and finally schedule your in-person interview.

This guide will help you determine your eligibility for Global Entry.

If you’re eligible, here are 5 tips to make the application process as smooth as possible.

ℹ️

If you're eligible for Global Entry and trying to book an interview appointment use AppointmentScanner to get text and email alerts whenever an appointment slot is available.

U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents

If you are a U.S. citizen, then you are eligible for Global Entry as long as you don't meet any of the disqualifications listed below.

Lawful permanent residents in the U.S. are also eligible to join the Global Entry program. Just make sure you answer all the relevant questions at the interview with the CBP officer.

You aren’t a low-risk traveler. The official Trusted Traveler Program website is vague about what exactly a “low-risk traveler” is, but as long as you are not flagged on any federal watchlists (for example terror threat watchlist), then it may be safe to assume you’re a low-risk traveler.

You've been convicted of any criminal offense, have pending charges, or have outstanding warrants. Any criminal charges on your record may make you ineligible for Global Entry. For example, if you have been convicted of driving under the influence, you may be ineligible for Global Entry.

You have previously violated customs, immigration, or agricultural regulations in any country. For example, if you have previously tried to smuggle illegal goods into the U.S. and were caught, this will remain on your record and can cause you to be ineligible.

You are the subject of an ongoing investigation by any local, state, or federal agency. This will appear on your background check and make you ineligible for Global Entry. For example, if there is currently a criminal investigation into your conduct by the FBI, you will likely be ineligible for Global Entry until that is resolved.

You’ve been denied the purchase of a firearm in the United States. The official TTP website does not go into detail about why this is the case, but there might be some overlap between someone who is denied the sale of a firearm and someone who isn’t considered a low-risk traveler.

You are inadmissible to the United States under immigration regulations. This will disqualify you for Global Entry.

Hopefully, none of these apply to you and you are eligible for the Global Entry program.

If you’re eligible, apply for the Global Entry program and book your interview now.

👋

AppointmentScanner.com is an alerting service which will send you text message, email, and web browser alerts for Global Entry, SENTRI, or NEXUS interview slots at up to three enrollment centers. You go to the official Trusted Traveler Program (TTP) website, head to your Dashboard, and when you try to schedule the appointment it says “No appointments available.” Or, you live near a busy airport and the only appointment available is one year from now. It can require checking the website for weeks before you are able to get an appointment at all, let alone one that fits your schedule.

If this sounds familiar, the Enrollment on Arrival program by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency (CBP) might be helpful for you as it lets you avoid the interview scheduling step of the application process. Instead of scheduling your interview at an enrollment center, you can do your interview at an enrollment center directly at the airport after arriving in the U.S. from an international destination. This is only possible at certain airports and requires that you have completed every step of the application up until the interview (you must be conditionally approved).

Keep in mind though that this can extend your international travel by another hour or two. Also, you won’t be able to use Global Entry until you have returned from your international trip. If you were to schedule the interview regularly (and can find an interview!) then you can already use Global Entry right away so Enrollment on Arrival may not always be as convenient as it seems.

Here is everything you need to know about the Enrollment on Arrival Program and some tips on how to get an interview scheduled faster in case you want to give it another go!

What is Global Entry?

Global Entry is a Trusted Traveler Program created by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency which enables members to access a special automated kiosk during the customs and immigration process when arriving in the U.S. from an international destination. Instead of using the regular customs and immigration line which can sometimes take hours, you can instead just scan your passport in the Global Entry kiosk and head to baggage claim.

Because Global Entry allows you to skip a step in the national security process, becoming a Global Entry member requires several bureaucratic steps to prove you are a ‘low-risk’ traveler. You start on the official Trusted Traveler Program website where you are asked a series of questions, pay a $100 (at the time of writing this) fee, and then wait to be conditionally approved.

Once you are conditionally approved, you are able to schedule your in-person interview. This is where things can get challenging. On the TTP scheduling page you may see the message “No appointments available” or the earliest appointment could be months or even a year in the future.

Why is it so hard to get an interview?

The reason it can be so difficult to get an interview appointment is simply because there is too much demand for the supply. The CBP is attempting to mitigate this by creating new enrollment centers and with initiatives like remote (Zoom) interview appointments for existing members who are re-enrolling.

Due to this, the only way to schedule an interview at a busier center is to keep checking the official TTP scheduling page and hope that there is a cancellation or new opening made available within a reasonable timeframe.

How to get an appointment before you travel?

Instead of constantly refreshing the TTP scheduling page and hoping that someone cancelled their interview, you can also use AppointmentScanner.com which will send you up to 25 alerts per day via text message, email, or web browser for any appointments that match your criteria. For example, you can set a max date 1 month away and you will only receive alerts for appointment openings in the next month that become available. Then, if someone cancels their appointment, you are alerted and you can hop onto the TTP website to schedule the appointment if it is still available.

What are walk-in interviews?

Walk-in interviews are possible due to the Enrollment on Arrival program from the CBP. This enables you to complete your interview without scheduling an appointment. Instead, you can complete your interview when you arrive at select airports from an international destination. You will have to follow the signs that direct you to CBP officers who can complete your interviews. Below we go over what airports allow walk-in interviews!

Who is eligible for walk-in interviews?

You must be conditionally approved for Global Entry to be eligible for walk-in interviews. This means that you must have an account on the official TTP website, must have paid the fee, submitted your personal info, and received a notification that you have been conditionally approved.

If you are unsure, head to dhs.ttp.gov and login. On your Dashboard, you should have the option to schedule your Global Entry interview. If your application is not in-progress then you need to start it there!

Where can you do walk-in interviews?

There are 65 locations at this time where you can complete your walk-in interview (15 of which are international in Aruba, Bermuda, Canada, Ireland, The Bahamas, United Arab Emirates, and Puerto Rico). Check the official Enrollment on Arrival website to see if there is a location near you.

What do you need for your interview?

To do your walk-in interview you need to bring:

Your valid passport. If you have multiple, bring all so they can be added to your file which enables you to use any passport at the Global Entry kiosk when going through customs and immigration.

Documents the prove your U.S. residency. For example, one of the following: your driver’s license if the address is accurate, rental payment statement, utility bill, bank statement, mortgage statement…

If you are not a U.S. citizen you may need to bring a Permanent Resident card or other documentation. Check the official CBP page about this as requirements vary based on citizenship!

👋

AppointmentScanner.com is an alerting service which will send you text message, email, and web browser alerts for Global Entry, SENTRI, or NEXUS interview slots at up to three enrollment centers. The line to get through customs is always long and takes at least an hour to get through. For any frequent international travelers out there, you will know the pain that is ending a long flight with a long wait in the customs line.

Global Entry is one of the Department of Homeland Security's Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP). As you might be expecting from a program created by a government department, there is a fair bit of bureaucracy involved in joining. Because you are able to skip an important aspect of national security, you have to jump through some hoops to prove you are a low-risk traveler.

Check out this in-depth guide on Global Entry if you want to learn more about how to join the program.

To summarize for anyone who is just getting to know Global Entry for the first time, the application has 3 distinct steps.

First, you must apply online on the official Trusted Traveler Program website. Make your payment ($100 for 5 years at the time of writing this article) and submit all the personal information that is asked. This information is used to conduct a background check on you.

Second, after you have submitted your online application, you have to wait to be conditionally approved. You will be notified when this happens and it means you have passed your background check and can proceed to the final step. It took me 4 days to get conditionally approved but we have heard horror stories where this has taken months (that was often during COVID times when there was a major back up though).

Finally, once you are conditionally approved you can schedule your interview with a Customs & Border Protection (CBP) officer. This is often where the trouble can begin because when you return to the official Trusted Traveler website to schedule your interview you may notice that there are no interviews available or that all interviews for the next year are booked.

Don't worry though, we have personally helped thousands of people complete their appointments within weeks (sometimes even days) so check out our top tips to make your Global Entry application process smoother.

Here are the top 5 tips to getting Global Entry

1. Check if the application fee is covered by your credit card

If you have recently gotten a new travel credit card or are planning to get a new one soon, keep in mind that many travel credit cards include a free Global Entry application fee. This would let you save the $100 fee that you pay for the 5 year membership. The fee is also non-refundable so if you are still hesitant about trying the application, the free application could help you make your decision.

Check out this list from The Points Guy that details credit cards that include Global Entry perks.

2. Don't use the date filters on the official interview scheduling site

The scheduling page on the official TTP website can be very misleading. There is a date filter at the top of the page to select the "Soonest available appointments" but in our testing, this filter will often hide the results for the interview location you are actually interested in.

Why? Though it's not explained anywhere on the TTP site, the date filter will only ever show five centers with the most recent appointments, (even if there are 100 centers with open appointments), so this can prevent you from seeing the center you want to interview at, even if there are appointment available.

Instead, ignore the date filter and scroll down to the full list of centers. Find your state and click the name of the center to fetch the soonest available appointments for that center.

3. Use an alerting service like AppointmentScanner.com to help book your interview

To schedule your appointment, you need to go to the official Trusted Traveler Program (TTP) website and find an appointment on the scheduler page at the enrollment center closest to you.

If this center is a busy location, you may find that there are no appointments available or that everything is booked for a year in advance. In that case, you will either have to book what you can, go to a different location, or keep refreshing the page until there is a new opening or cancellation.

Or...

You can use AppointmentScanner.com and be sent instant SMS, email, or web browser alerts whenever a new appointment is available that meets your criteria. Simply sign up, pay $29 for one month of alerts, select your interview enrollment centers and the latest date you would like to interview. Then, just wait to receive alerts whenever something opens up and you can hop into the TTP website to schedule it.

Keep in mind that AppointmentScanner.com can't reserve or book the interview for you. You'll still need to book the interview yourself, just as you would without Appointment Scanner. It takes some quick reflexes and persistence, but if you're willing to stick with it for a week or so, your odds of success are extremely high.

Appointment Scanner has helped thousands of people schedule an interview within weeks of signing up, even at the busiest centers such as JFK, LAX, and SFO.

4. Use Remote / Zoom interviews if you are renewing your membership

The Customs and Border Protection Agency is allowing remote interviews via Zoom for certain Global Entry candidates applying for renewal (after the 5 years are up).

To sign up for a remote interview, go to your dashboard on the official Trusted Traveler Program website and check your eligibility. Click the “Schedule interview” button on your pending application. If you see an option to select between "remote" and "in-person," you are eligible! If you don’t see this option, it means are you not eligible for remote appointments and will need a traditional in-person appointment.

The main benefit of remote appointments is that you don't need to go in-person to a center to interview. You can also interview with any enrollment center that supports remote appointments (not just the nearest location that you can drive to).

Also, keep in mind that if you are using Appointment Scanner for alerts about interview appointment openings, remote appointment are also supported. There are generally less cancellations for remote appointments compared to regular appointments (because generally people can do the appointment from anywhere in the world), but there are still new Zoom appointment releases every few days, which Appointment Scanner will monitor for. Hundreds of Global Entry renewal candidates have successfully scheduled remote appointments using Appointment Scanner. If you're eligible, Appointment Scanner and remote appointments are one of the quickest and most convenient ways to renew your Global Entry membership.

5. Look into Enrollment on Arrival

The Enrollment on Arrival program allows you to complete your interview while going through customs when you arrive back in the US from an international destination. You'll need to be conditionally approved and traveling through a supported international airport. (Check the list of supported airports). Look for the signs for Enrollment on Arrival or ask a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer to direct you when you land.

The major downside to Enrollment on Arrival is that you have to take an entire international trip before securing Global Entry benefits–no TSA PreCheck to skip the security line, no accelerated customs line.

Enrollment on Arrival can also be very hit or miss and hard to rely on if you need Global Entry by a particular deadline. At busy airports, the line for Enrollment on Arrival can stretch for hours, so be prepared to wait–not exactly the most enjoyable experience after a long international flight. If you're traveling with a group, this may be a non-starter. The centers also close during certain days and times, sometimes without notice. Overall, Enrollment on Arrival is hardly the silver bullet for Global Entry that travelers hoped it would be when it first began, but it's another option to consider.

We recommend treating Enrollment on Arrival as a last case resort if you can't schedule an interview. For most travelers, scheduling a last minute interview via Appointment Scanner ends up being a far more painless option, and allows you to breeze through your next international trip with your Global Entry benefits secured, rather than than worrying about completing an interview after your flight.

👋

Having trouble finding Global Entry interview appointments?AppointmentScanner.com can help you cut months off the wait time for an interview, with alerts for last minute interviews when others cancel at your preferred enrollment centers. Once you are accepted into the program, you are able to use a special line when you arrive from an international flight at many airports in the United States which is much faster than the regular customs and immigration line.

You also receive TSA PreCheck membership which allows you to use a special line when traveling through TSA airport security at 200+ airports in the United States. Having TSA PreCheck means you don't need to take off your shoes, belt, or jacket and you don't have to remove electronics or small liquid containers from your bags. It’s a small luxury but makes the travel experience that much better.

These things make a big difference if you take many international trips.

How do you join the Global Entry program?

The process begins on the official Trusted Traveler Program website of the Department of Homeland Security. You create an account, complete the Global Entry application, pay the $100 application fee, and wait for DHS to complete your background check and give you conditional approval.

Then it becomes a little more challenging.

After you’ve received conditional approval, you need to schedule an in-person Global Entry interview at one of the official enrollment centers.

You’ll see on the scheduling page that interview slots aren’t available until a year out or the enrollment center simply says “No appointments available.”

But what does “No appointments available for this location” mean?

Why does the interview scheduling page say "No appointments available"?

Although it sounds like you will never be able to get an appointment at this location, that usually isn’t the case.

When a Global enrollment center displays the dreaded “No appointments available” message, it just means that all the openings they have made available are already booked.

Luckily, "No appointments available" does not mean that the center is closed, or that it's not conducting interviews. In almost every case, the center is open, and conducting interviews as fast as they can.

The good news is most Global Entry enrollment centers have hundreds of new appointments open up every week.

Why are new appointments made available?

Cancellations

One of the main reasons that Global Entry appointments become available is due to cancellations.

We all can relate to random things coming up in life that we can’t make an appointment. That happens all the time with Global Entry appointments.

Our data shows that even smaller centers usually have a handful of cancellations, between 5-20 per day.

On the other hand, larger centers at major airports like those in Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO), New York (JFK), San Diego (SAN), and Atlanta (ATL) can see a hundred or more cancellations daily.

These last-minute appointments are in high demand and often only stay open for a minute or two before they are booked, so speed is critical.

⭐

Use AppointmentScanner to get interviews as soon as tomorrow, even at the busiest enrollment centers.

New openings are made available by enrollment centers

Each enrollment center has a slightly different release schedule for new appointments.

For example, San Diego releases appointments one year in advance because it is a very busy center.

Many other centers release new appointments every few weeks or months on a rolling basis so it’s important to be persistent and stick with it for a few weeks.

How can you schedule the appointment if it says "No appointments available"?

You have three options:

Keep refreshing the scheduling page and hope there are new appointments available. You’re unlikely to be successful at this, especially if you live in a larger city and the closest enrollment center is at a busy airport. Even if an appointment slot is available, there may be multiple people trying to grab it. If someone is faster than you, they might complete the booking process before you do.

Try your hand at enrollment on arrival. If you’re traveling, you can try to get an appointment on arrival by checking with US Customs and Border Protection but this is hit or miss. I’ve heard stories of people who were successful with this method when they were traveling outside the US, and were able to get an appointment at an international airport in Puerto Rico or Singapore.

Use AppointmentScanner to get text and email notifications when an appointment slot opens up. Instead of refreshing the scheduling page, wait for an alert and hop into the official scheduling page to grab the time slot. If you aren’t successful, don’t worry, you’ll continue to receive notifications as more time slots open up.

What about appointments for NEXUS and SENTRI?

For citizens of Canada and Mexico, it can be as difficult to get interviews for NEXUS and SENTRI as it is for Global Entry. The process of booking an appointment is the same.

We recommend using AppointmentScanner to get an appointment sooner.

What about remote appointments?

If you’re renewing your Global Entry membership, you may be eligible for remote interviews over Zoom.

First time Global Entry applicants will need to schedule an in-person interview.

The easiest way to find out if you're eligible for a remote interview is to click the "Schedule Interview" button on your TTP dashboard. If you see the option to choose between remote or in-person interviews, then you’re eligible. Otherwise, you’ll need an in-person interview.

Our data suggests there are fewer cancellations for remote appointments so it may be more challenging to snag a remote interview appointment.

Even though there are fewer cancellations with remote appointments, new time slots are often released every few days.

Because you're not limited to just the enrollment centers that are within your region (like with in-person interviews), you might end up conducting your interviews with a CBP officer on the other side of the country, right from your kitchen table. This is especially convenient if you have a busy family or work schedule or if you live hours away from the nearest enrollment center.

⭐

AppointmentScanner users have reported booking remote interviews within hours of signing up and completed the interview process a few days later–all without ever leaving their home, or wasting any time refreshing the appointment scheduling page.

Get alerts about appointment slots (including remote interviews).

What is Global Entry?

Are you interested in skipping the long customs and immigration line after your trip? Until you are conditionally approved you cannot proceed to the final step: the in-person interview.

Interview

After you are conditionally approved, the final step in your enrollment is to complete an in-person interview.

Although it seems like you are nearly finished, the interview scheduling is notoriously the most time consuming and frustrating step in this process.

To schedule your interview, you have to return to the official Trusted Traveler Program website. Once you are logged in and conditionally approved, you will now have an option to schedule your interview. Scroll down to the enrollment center where you would like to have your interview (usually the airport closest to you) you may find that there are "no appointments available" or the earliest appointment is months (or over a year!) away.

There are some ways to expedite this process though. Check out our full guide on how to get an interview faster for a detailed overview.

In a nutshell, your options are to keep refreshing the official scheduling page and wait for cancellations/new appointment slots or to use an alerting app such as AppointmentScanner.com which will send you text messages, emails, or web browser notifications when an appointment becomes available at the enrollment centers (up to 3) you select so you can go and book the appointment before someone else takes it.

We may be a little biased, but we think AppointmentScanner.com is the single best way to get Global Entry in 2022. Rather than sitting on your computer, constantly refreshing the scheduling page, hoping for an opening, let the robots do the work. Just sit back and wait for an alert, then hop on the Trusted Traveler Program site and claim the interview slot.

Pros and Cons of Global Entry

Pros

Much faster customs and immigration process when entering the United States from an international destination. Use automated kiosks at nearly every international airport in the US instead of the regular customs and immigration line.

Includes TSA PreCheck which allows you to use an expedited line at airport security at 200+ airports in the United States. No more taking off your shoes, belt, jacket or removing electronics and small liquids from your bag. If you hate taking off your shoes at the airport then this is a game changer for you! You can also bring children 12 and under with you through the TSA PreCheck line

Although the process involves many steps, it can also be relatively quick with a few tricks. Once you apply for conditional approval online using the official Trusted Traveler Program website, most people receive a response within a few days. The final step, doing your in-person interview an an official enrollment center, can take much longer since many centers are booked for months. But if you use an alerting service like AppointmentScanner.com you will receive SMS, email, or web browser alerts whenever an interview at your enrollment center is available for you to book within the time frame you selected. This means that you don't have to try all day to get an appointment, you can instead just sign up for alerts and let Appointment Scanner alert you when an interview is available.

Cons

All children are required to have their own membership. This means that they also need to do a Global Entry interview at an enrollment center and it can be difficult to book back-to-back appointments. At busy centers you would likely need appointments months in the future if you are hoping for back-to-back appointments which means that you may need to travel to the interview enrollment center multiple times. An alternative would be to use Enrollment on Arrival. If you are traveling through certain airports you may be able to do your interview when you arrive at the airport from your international destination. (Although the line for Enrollment on Arrival is often several hours long–not ideal at the end of a long trip, when all you want to do is get home.)

If you are traveling with someone that doesn't have Global Entry they cannot join you.

The membership costs $100 for 5 years which will increase the required budget for your travels.

👋

Having trouble finding Global Entry interview appointments?AppointmentScanner.com can help you cut months off the wait time for an interview, with alerts for last minute interviews when others cancel at your preferred enrollment centers.
